Sleep Apnea Appliances

Getting Better Sleep in Huntington, NY

iSleep testing at sleep Huntington

Fatigue throughout the day, being told by your significant other that you snore, and uncharacteristic irritability are some of the more common symptoms of sleep apnea, a series of pauses in breathing when you sleep. To help our patients have a healthy, comfortable life, Dr. Saeed Epakchi of Smile Huntington provides sleep apnea treatments in Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, and the surrounding communities. Schedule an appointment with him today if you suspect that you have apnea.

Determining the Right Treatment

The first step in improving your sleep health is to determine the specific type of apnea you have. There are different types of sleep apnea, each of which has different levels of severity. Knowing your exact apnea case is critical to providing effective treatment.

After confirming the likelihood that your symptoms may be caused by apnea, Our Huntington dental practice gives you a take-home sleep test kit. You use the kit to record the information pertaining to how you have been sleeping and any life factors that may be affecting the quality of your rest. Once you return the completed kit to Dr. Epakchi, he applies the material gathered to a package that is shipped off to a sleep study center for an official diagnosis, which is returned to us within a couple of weeks. Once our practice has the results back, Dr. Epakchi reviews them with you and recommends your available treatment options.

This process is not only convenient for most patients, but it can also produce more accurate results than those produced at a sleep center. The sleep test kit records your restfulness at home, in the normal environment where you fall asleep. Trying to fall asleep at an unfamiliar place, such as a sleep center, causes enough discomfort to skew the recorded data and complicate the final diagnosis.

Appliance Therapy

Depending upon the type and complexity of your sleep apnea case, one of the available treatment options is sleep apnea appliance therapy. Appliances treat mild to moderate cases of obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when the soft tissue of your mouth and throat relax and block the airway, which pauses your breathing. These mouth guard-like devices gently move your jaw forward to widen the airway and so prevent the relaxed tissue from obstructing your breathing.

If you have an obstructive apnea case that is not too severe, then Smile Huntington can administer appliance therapy. Dr. Epakchi partners with a laboratory to craft a device customized to fit your smile comfortably, and has you make sure it fits before sending it home with you. Our dentist also works with your insurance provider beforehand so that you are aware of your coverage; if financial considerations are going to affect your choice of treatment, then we give you the necessary information to make that decision.
